Africa Industrialisation Day

20 November 2020 was Africa Industrialisation Day ‘Despite being the second most-populated continent in the world (1.2 billion people), Africa represented only 1.4 % of the world Manufacturing value added in the first quarter of 2020.’

With a young workforce and the unique opportunity to leapfrog outdated technologies and use the most effective, sustainable and (oftentimes) cheapest technologies available Africa can ‘enhance productivity, increase the capabilities of the workforce, and generate employment’.

What her leaders must remember in the process, however, is to ensure that new manufacturing capacity truly brings benefits and work to Africans. And they must not allow all of the associated profits to be taken off shore. Africans must benefit from work done on the continent.
