With so much happening at the moment many may have missed that this past Tuesday, 29 Sep 2020 was the inaugaral International Day of Awareness of Food Loss & Waste.
There is enough food in the world for everyone. Yet 690 million people go hungry while 14% of food produced is lost between harvest and rail (in the case of fruit and vegetables its over 20%).
If there is one area where business can contribute towards meeting the SDGs at little cost (if not improving revenue) it’s here: imagine improving your supply chains and not losing that 14% – what a difference that could make towards combating malnutrition and improving the bottom line. Focusing on sustainability makes business sense.
As we negotiate our next deals, let us all think a little bit more laterally and not take the way things are done for granted. Let us push each other to do business better. By doing so we can improve revenue and ensure that we limit food loss and waste and decrease the number of children, women and men who wake up each morning, and go to bed each night, hungry.
